Yaghoob Foroutan,
Volume 1, Issue 3 (2-2013)
Abstract

This article explains the consequences of the Islamic identity in the Western societies from a sociological perspective. The extensive literature reviewed in this paper supports the fact that Muslims in the western societies have been substantially affected by such recent events as the 9/11 in the US and 7/7 in the UK. This particularly applies to Muslim women due to their Islamic dress codes. Using logistic regression analysis and the theory of discrimination associated with cultural and religious identity, it also examines whether and how significantly the status of Muslims in the western contexts is associated with their religious identity. Generally speaking, the results indicate the key pattern that those with the Islamic dress codes are more likely to be excluded in the West.

Abstract

The aim of the present paper is empirical and theoretical explanation of the relationship between the religious and self-actualization. This study is performed by survey method among students of Yazd University. Also according to Cochran's formula, the sample is selected using stratified method equivalent 272 people. Based on the results, the degree of religiosity and self-actualization are more between women than men. In terms of statistical, religiosity has a positive and significant relationship with self-actualization. Also among dimensions of religious, the Outcome dimension has the strongest relationship with self-actualization. To explain the relationship between two variables, structural equation modeling (SEM) is used, that impact factor equivalent 0.21, indicates a positive relationship between these two variables

Abstract

The rise of various religiosity and new religious identities from one hand and the prevalence of modern life styles in Iran from the other hand are due to common modern lifestyles. However, much research show that religion still plays a significant and effective role in directing lifestyles. This situation requires studying the role of religious beliefs on resisting the consumerist modern culture and understanding the relationship between religious identity and modern life styles. This research has been done among Tonkabonian women and tried to investigate the acceptance or resistance of these women against the consumerist culture or its combination with the religious culture which ever advises moderate consumption. The women studied in this research have purposively been chosen from the married ones of Tonekabon city and categorized in four types based on the amount of religiosity and employment. The research findings show some relationships between religiosity and lifestyles among them, that is, the religiosity affects accepting or resisting modern lifestyle and its components (leisure activities, mode of shopping and consumption, and the kind of social communications). It means that the more religious women were the less they followed modern lifestyle. Moreover the comparison between the religious working and non-working women shows that the employment made no difference in their approaches to mode lifestyle and consumption but in either of them, religious attitudes have had more influence on their everyday lifestyle. The findings also indicate that working women lifestyles differ from nonworking women. The working women often spend their leisure outside of home with previous planning in a more favorable and useful way, division of housework in their home is more participatory and most of them consider both applied and aesthetic criteria for shopping.

Abstract

In contemporary sociological debates, the concept of social capital is as a rich theoretical concept with e dense research findings and Because of its association with different dimensions of development in the society, social and political policymakers have focused on investigation of its role on development. With this regard, the aim of the survey is to study the association between participation in religious communities and social capital among residents in Shiraz city. Using multi-stage cluster sampling method 410 participants (196 male, 214 female) randomly selected and answered to the questionnaire. The results show between participation in religious communities and the different dimensions of social capital such as social cohesion, inter-group trust and institutional trust there is a significant positive correlation, except social participation findings also show that correlation with institutional trust is stronger than other dimensions. This means that with increased participation in religious communities, participant's social capital increases. The investigators suggest future research to analyze the content of the messages in religious communities can also affect different dimension of social capital.

Abstract

Introduction: Fundamental Reform Document of Education is one of the valid documents to show the socialization process of students, so it should pay attention, with no reduction, to science and religion aspects. According to this point the main question of the research is what's the discoursive position of the mentioned document in encountering science and religion?
Method: Since this study is documentary and based on analyzing text, it's done by using discourse analysis method, evolution assertion analysis, and qualitative content analysis. Its reliability is achieved through editing the categories by experts. Interpeting the data is based on the researcher's deduction and their compatibility with sociology of science theories.
Results: The fundamental evolution document used marked words and value metaphors in introducing the ideals, goals, plans and methods of promoting science, in contrast to the language of science which has changed scientific discourse into religious discourse.
Discussion: The fundamental evolution document recognized that the science learning process was based on the old methods of producing knowledge and the deficit model, and has not paid much attention to new ways of producing knowledge (Gibbons’ theory) and networking. The empty signifier of the fundamental evolution document is the "enculturational model" and "tacit knowledge".

Abstract

Industrial development has been one of the most consequential drivers of social and cultural changes in societies in recent centuries. Industrialization has led to different kinds of socialization and brought new values to traditional societies. This research aims to shed light on industrial socialization's impact on religious and gender values in Pars Special Economic Energy Zone. The  data has been collected from a survey among residents (aged 18-65 years old). Also the samples have been divided into two groups (who socialize before or after oil and gas industries development in this region). The SPSS and AMOS have been conducted to use multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) methods. The results show that gender inequality and religious values are less common among those below 30 years old. This group has been socialized after industrial development in the field. In other words, respondents who grow in the industrial space have more egalitarian values about women and more secular believes.
